Rowing Machines and VO2 Max
Rowing is one of the few home machines with a published VO2max estimator behind it: enter a 2 km time and a body weight. Here is what that number is worth, and how to move it.

Short answer: yes, hard rowing is a strong stimulus for VO2 max, and rowing is unusual among home cardio machines in having a published estimator attached to it. Concept2 hosts a VO2max calculator that asks for your body weight, your best 2,000 metre time, your sex and your training level, and Concept2 states it was built from thousands of real data points collected by Dr. Fritz Hagerman at Ohio University, who ran gas-analysis VO2max tests on subjects, had them row a maximal 2,000 m piece, and correlated the two. Concept2 is equally plain that it is an estimate, and that VO2 max is best measured in a lab. This is general fitness information, not medical advice; a maximal 2 km test is a genuinely hard effort, so talk to a doctor first if you have any cardiac concern.
What VO2 max actually is
VO2 max is the most oxygen your body can take in and use in a minute, usually expressed per kilogram of body weight. It is a ceiling rather than a performance: it describes how much aerobic capacity you have available, not how well you use it. Two people with the same number can perform very differently, because technique, efficiency and pacing all sit between the ceiling and the result on the monitor.
It is also the reason rowing shows up in this conversation more than most machines. A rowing stroke recruits legs, hips, back and arms together, so a hard rowing effort asks for oxygen across a very large amount of muscle at once. That is what drives the number up: not the machine, but the quantity of muscle you can load simultaneously at an intensity you cannot hold for long. Muscles worked covers the breakdown.
The 2,000 metre test, and why it is the input
The reason the Concept2 calculator asks for a 2 km time rather than anything else is that a maximal 2,000 m piece lands almost exactly on the duration where aerobic capacity is the limiting factor — long enough that you cannot sprint it, short enough that you cannot pace it comfortably. That is also why it is the standard racing distance for indoor rowing, and why what is a good 2k time is one of the most-read pages on this site.
Two cautions about the number it produces. First, it is weight-sensitive, because VO2 max is reported per kilogram — two rowers with identical 2 km times and different body weights get different estimates, which is correct arithmetic and surprises people anyway. Second, it is an estimate from a correlation. Concept2 notes that even results which look unlikely come from real people and the real spread that exists between them. Treat it as a well-founded ballpark and a very good tracker of your own progress, not a clinical measurement.
How to actually move the number
The training that raises aerobic ceiling is not mysterious, and it is not the thing most people do on a rowing machine. Two ingredients, in this order of importance:
- A large base of easy volume. Most methods put the large majority of weekly work at a conversational effort, because that is what builds the aerobic machinery the hard sessions then exploit. On a rower that means long, low-stroke-rate pieces — zone 2 training and steady state are the two templates.
- A small amount of work at or near your ceiling. Intervals of roughly three to six minutes at an effort you could not hold for ten, with recoveries long enough that you can repeat them, are the classic shape for this. Our HIIT session and the 5 km piece both land in useful territory, and the pyramid session is a gentler way into it.
The failure mode is a week spent entirely in the moderately-hard middle: too hard to accumulate volume, too easy to stress the ceiling. It feels like the most productive way to train and it is the least. If you take one practical thing from this page, make your easy rows properly easy so your hard rows can be properly hard.
Two numbers to steer by rather than heart rate alone, because heart rate lags and drifts: your 500 m split and stroke rate. For the ceiling work specifically, watts is the cleanest figure, because it is the same number regardless of the distance you happen to be covering.
What the machine has to do for this
Less than the training does, but the requirements are real and all of them are published. You need a monitor that shows a pace figure — a 500 m split or watts — because without one, “at your ceiling” is a feeling and feelings drift. You need a machine whose resistance does not run out when you ask for a maximal effort: air and water both scale with how hard you pull, while a magnetic machine has a ceiling set by the level you selected, which is the mechanism air vs magneticcovers. And if you intend to use the Concept2 calculator, you need a machine on which a 2,000 m time means something comparable — which in practice means a performance monitor rather than a basic LCD.
| Machine | Monitor | Resistance | Capacity | Needs mains power |

Where this lands
Three machines you can run a real 2 km test on
Concept2 RowErg
The obvious one, and the machine the calculator was built around: the PM5 shows split, watts, stroke rate and drag factor at once, pairs with a heart rate strap over Bluetooth or ANT+, and air resistance means a maximal effort never meets a ceiling. No subscription, a published 500 lb capacity and a five-year frame warranty.

MERACH NovaRow R50 Pro
The same competition-style geometry and a performance-style monitor for roughly half the money, and it splits for vertical storage. MERACH publishes no user weight limit for this model, which is worth knowing before you commit to it.

WaterRower Natural (Ash)
For the reader whose hard sessions have to happen in a living room. Water scales with effort exactly as air does, so a maximal piece is a real maximal piece - and it stands on end afterwards. Heavy at 103.5 lb, so drain the tank before moving it.

What this page will not tell you
It will not give you a table of VO2 max figures by age, and that omission is deliberate. Those tables circulate widely, usually without a source, and the values differ between the references they are supposedly drawn from. Concept2’s calculator is a source we can point at and describe; a normative table we cannot trace is exactly the kind of number this site exists not to publish. Run the calculator against your own 2 km time, write the result down, and compare it with your own result in three months. That comparison is the useful one.
It also will not claim a rowing machine raises VO2 max faster than running or cycling. We have no source for that ranking, the honest answer is that it depends on how hard you work, and it would be convenient for us to say otherwise — which is the best reason not to. Rowing machine vs running runs the comparison on the things that can be compared.
Straight answers
Questions people actually ask
Does a rowing machine improve VO2 max?
Hard rowing is a strong stimulus for aerobic capacity, because a rowing stroke loads legs, hips, back and arms at once and so demands oxygen across a large amount of muscle. The training that raises the ceiling is a big base of easy volume plus a small amount of work at or near maximal effort - not a week spent entirely in the moderately-hard middle.
How do I calculate VO2 max on a rowing machine?
Concept2 hosts a VO2max calculator that asks for your body weight, your best 2,000 m time, your sex and your training level. Concept2 states it was built from thousands of real data points collected by Dr. Fritz Hagerman at Ohio University, who ran gas-analysis VO2max tests and correlated them with maximal 2,000 m erg pieces. Concept2 also states it is an estimate, and that VO2 max is best measured in a lab.
Why does the calculator ask for a 2,000 m time?
Because a maximal 2 km piece lands almost exactly on the duration where aerobic capacity is the limiting factor - too long to sprint, too short to pace comfortably. That is also why 2,000 m is the standard racing distance for indoor rowing, and why it is the input the correlation was built on.
Is the Concept2 VO2max estimate accurate?
It is a well-founded estimate rather than a measurement, and Concept2 says so plainly. It is weight-sensitive, because VO2 max is reported per kilogram, so two rowers with the same 2 km time and different body weights will get different numbers. Its real value is tracking your own progress over months rather than comparing yourself with anyone else.
What rowing workout is best for VO2 max?
Intervals of roughly three to six minutes at an effort you could not hold for ten, with recoveries long enough that you can repeat them - sitting on top of a much larger base of easy, conversational rowing. The common mistake is doing all of the week at a moderately-hard effort, which is too hard to accumulate volume and too easy to stress the ceiling.
Do I need a special rowing machine to train VO2 max?
You need two things, both published on the listing. A monitor that shows a pace figure - a 500 m split or watts - because without one 'maximal effort' is guesswork. And resistance that does not run out: air and water both scale with how hard you pull, while a magnetic machine has a ceiling set by the level you selected.
