What a 500m Split Means
The 500m split is the number that runs the sport — a pace unit that transfers between machines in a way distance and calories never will.

Sit next to an experienced rower and they will not ask how fast you are going. They will ask what your split is. The 500m split is the number that runs the sport, and once you understand it, the rest of the monitor makes sense.
What the split actually is
Your split is the time it would take to row 500 meters at your currentpace. A “2:00 split” means you are working at a rate that would cover 500 meters in two minutes. A “1:45 split” is faster; a “2:15 split” is slower. Lower is quicker — the same direction as any race time.
It is a projection, not a stopwatch. The monitor is not timing an actual 500 meters; it is calculating, from the power you are producing right now, how long 500 meters would take if you held this exact effort. That is why the number updates live as you speed up and slow down, and why it is such a good way to hold an even pace across a long piece.
The reason 500 meters is the reference distance is simply convention: it is short enough that the numbers are memorable and long enough to be a meaningful unit of pace. Rowing settled on it, and now everyone speaks it.
Underneath the split is a single quantity the monitor actually measures: power, in watts. The split is just that wattage re-expressed as a pace, because a time per 500 meters is far easier to race against than a raw number of watts. Everything else on the display — total distance, a projected finish time — is derived from the same measurement.
In practice the split earns its keep as a pacing tool. A common beginner mistake is to start a piece well below the split you can actually sustain, feel wonderful for two minutes, and then fall apart; picking a realistic split and holding it even from the first stroke to the last is both more comfortable and more productive. Watching the number drift up tells you that you are tiring, often before your legs have said so themselves.
Split is pace; stroke rate is cadence
The split is often confused with stroke rate, and they are completely different things. Stroke rate— strokes per minute, or SPM — is how many strokes you take in a minute. The split is how fast you are going. One is cadence; the other is pace.
This is the same distinction as running. Your pace is minutes per mile; your cadence is steps per minute. You can run the same pace with a short quick stride or a long slow one, and you can row the same split at a high rate or a low one. The monitor shows both numbers precisely because they are independent.
Because they are independent, the two numbers give you two levers to pull. If your split is slipping, you can either put more power into each stroke or take slightly more strokes a minute — and knowing which of those you are doing, moment to moment, is most of what it means to pace a piece well. Chasing the split with rate alone is how people end up flailing at 34 strokes a minute for a pace they could hold more calmly at 24.
Why the same split rows at different rates
Here is the part that surprises people: two rowers can hold an identical 2:00 split at completely different stroke rates. Your split is determined by power— how much work you put into each stroke, multiplied by how often. A powerful rower taking long, heavy strokes at 20 a minute can produce exactly the same split as a lighter rower taking quicker strokes at 28.
That means stroke rate on its own tells you almost nothing about how hard someone is working. Rowing at 30 strokes a minute is not automatically harder than rowing at 22; it depends entirely on how much power is in each stroke. The most efficient way to hit a given split is usually a lower, stronger stroke rather than a fast, weak one — fewer, harder strokes beat more, weaker ones at almost every level of the sport.
The damper interacts with this too, without changing the split much. It alters how the effort is distributed — a few heavy strokes or more light ones — not how much work you are doing overall. The damper is a gearing feel, not a difficulty dial.
Why the PM5’s split is the common language
The split matters most because it is comparable. A 1:50 split on a Concept2 PM5 in one city means the same thing as a 1:50 split on a Concept2 PM5 in another. The machines agree because the monitor computes pace from the actual deceleration of the flywheel — a physical measurement of work — rather than from an assumption.
Budget monitors do not share that language. They report distance and calories using their own internal arithmetic, tuned by the manufacturer, and there is no reason a “500m” on one brand’s display should equal 500m on another’s. It is fine for tracking your own progress on your own machine, and useless the moment you want to compare against anyone else.
