The 5-Year Cost of Every Major Rowing Machine

A rowing machine has two prices. One is on the box. The other arrives every month for as long as you own it, and it is usually the larger of the two.

Nobody prints them together. We read nine of the biggest publishers in this category on 24 July 2026 and not one computes multi-year cost of ownership. They put a sticker price beside a machine that requires $50 a month to function as advertised and call it a comparison.

The table

How this is calculated

Machine pricecomes from a live Amazon feed, refreshed daily. There is no cached fallback: if the feed has not run within 48 hours, every number on this page disappears and the table stops rendering. We would rather show you nothing than last week’s arithmetic.

Subscriptionis the brand’s own published month-to-month rate, multiplied by 12, 36 and 60. Every figure carries a source and an access date, listed on the subscriptions page. Where a brand publishes a cheaper annual rate we show that separately rather than folding it in.

A machine drops outof the table entirely if either input is missing — no live price, or a subscription figure we could not verify. Anything that drops out is named beneath the table with the reason, because a silently shorter table reads as “we covered everything” when we did not.

What we deliberately do not model

Electricity. Shipping. Floor mats. Seat pads. Water purification tablets. Resale value. Extended warranties.

Every one of those is a real cost, and every one of them would require an assumption we cannot source — how much you pay per kilowatt-hour, whether you already own a mat, what a five-year-old machine fetches in your area. Adding them would make the number look more precise while making it less true.

The scope is: what the machine costs, plus what the manufacturer charges you to keep using it as designed. Add your own line items from there.

What the table shows

The subscription is usually the bigger number

On the connected rowers, the membership routinely accounts for more of the five-year total than the machine does. That is not a criticism of the machines — it is a fact about how they are priced, and it is invisible if you only ever look at the sticker.

No-subscription machines cluster at the bottom

Sort by year five and the top of the table is dominated by machines with no recurring cost at all. A Concept2 RowErg — a 500 lb capacity, five-year frame warranty, thirty-year parts availability — costs less over five years than most connected rowers cost in subscription alone.

The annual prepay is a real discount, with a catch

Hydrow’s $456-a-year works out at $38 a month against $50. Aviron’s annual plan is about $24 against $29. Ergatta’s five-year prepay drops $39 to $27 — but requires $1,620 in one payment.

Those are genuine savings. They are also a commitment made before you know whether you will still be rowing, which is precisely the bet the brand is asking you to take.

The honest counter-argument

A cheaper machine you do not use costs more per session than an expensive one you do.

If you have bought exercise equipment before and it became a clothes rail, the real comparison is not $990 against $4,995 — it is $990 for a machine that gathers dust against $4,995 for one that gets used three times a week because somebody is telling you to.

That is a legitimate reason to pay. Just make the decision with this table in front of you rather than a monthly figure, because $50 a month does not feel like $3,000 and that is exactly why subscriptions are priced monthly.
