For a tall rower, the specification that matters most is not the screen, the resistance or even the price. It is rail length — the distance the seat can travel — because if the rail runs out before your legs reach full extension, you finish every stroke with your lower back instead of your legs. Do that a few thousand times and you will have opinions about rowing machines and your spine.

What actually decides this

Rail length is the whole decision

A rowing stroke needs the seat to travel from the catch, where your shins are vertical, to the finish, where your legs are flat. The distance between those two positions is set by your inseam. As a rough guide, rowers up to about six feet are comfortable on a 46-inch rail; taller than that, you want 48 inches or more.

The Concept2 answer for tall rowers

The Concept2 RowErg does not publish a maximum height, but it publishes the number that actually matters: users with an inseam of 38 inches or more may require an extra-long monorail. A longer rail means a longer machine, so the tall-user pick usually costs you floor space. Plan for where it lives — a wooden water rower stands on end, a Concept2 splits into two pieces, and most magnetic machines fold or store upright.
