Sunny Health & Fitness Rowers Review
Six machines from $130 to $500 — and the only brand at this price that routinely publishes rail length, inseam clearance and seat height.
We earn a commission if you buy through the links on this page, at no cost to you. It has no effect on what we recommend or the order we recommend it in — we say “skip this one” on machines that pay us the same as the ones we like. How we’re funded.

Sunny Health & Fitness Smart Dual-Rail Rower
A 50-inch rail, 16 magnetic levels and a published 300 lb capacity, with covered dual rails that keep the running noise down.
Skip this one if: Skip it if you need more than 300 lb of capacity — the rail is excellent but the frame rating is the binding constraint.
Price as of July 24, 2026. #ad How we’re funded
Sunny Health & Fitness makes more rowing machines than anyone else we cover, across a wider price range, and the reason it appears at the top of several of our roundups is not that the machines are exceptional. It is that Sunny publishes the numbers.
Rail length. Inseam clearance. Maximum user height. Seat height. Weight capacity. These are the specifications that decide whether a rowing machine fits you, and most brands at this price publish none of them. Sunny routinely publishes three or four.
It also states plainly on every listing that the SunnyFit app carries no membership fee, which over five years is worth more than the difference between most of these machines.

The range, from top to bottom
Smart Dual-Rail Rower — the one to buy
79.3 in long, 19.7 in wide, 68 lb, a published 50-inch rail, 16 magnetic resistance levels and a stated 300 lb capacity. The dual rails carry protective coverings, which are doing acoustic work rather than decoration.
This is our pick for the quietest machine on the site and our pick under $500. A 50-inch rail is long enough for most adults to reach full leg extension, and 16 levels gives you a usable range rather than a coarse one.
Smart Magnetic Rower, Extra Long Rail — the tall-rower pick
The most completely documented machine in this price band anywhere. Sunny publishes 48 inches of rail, 44 inches of inseam length, and a stated fit for rowers up to 6 ft 8 in. Three numbers that almost nobody else prints even one of.
The trade is 8 magnetic levels rather than 16, and 81.7 inches of overall length — the tall-user fit costs you floor space. Sunny does not publish a weight capacity for this model.
Obsidian Surge — the budget water rower
80 in by 22 in, 82 lb, sixteen hydro blades, and a 17-inch seat height that is unusually high for a budget machine — an easy step on and off, which matters more than it sounds if that is the reason you are shopping.
Steel rather than wood, so it does not deliver the reason most people buy a water rower. But it delivers the water sound and the self-regulating resistance at roughly a quarter of a WaterRower’s price.
Phantom Hydro — the folding water rower
A vertical water tank that folds, with a published 300 lb capacity. Very few water rowers fold at all, and the vertical tank is what makes it possible. It is 39.5 inches tall in use as a result, which is not subtle.
Smart Compact Hydraulic and SF-RW1205 — the entry points
22.4 lb and 20.5 lb respectively. Both hydraulic, both cheap, both honest about what they are.
Hydraulic cylinders warm up during a session and the resistance drifts as they do, so the load you set at minute one is not the load you have at minute twenty. And the stroke does not much resemble rowing — it is a pull against a piston, not a drive against a flywheel.
These are worth buying for one reason: to find out whether you will actually use a rowing machine, for the price of a decent pair of trainers. If you already know the answer is yes, buy the magnetic machine instead.
What SunnyFit actually is
Sunny publishes 1,000+ trainer-led workouts on the SunnyFit app with, in its own words, no membership fees. Every machine here includes it.
It is not Peloton. The production is more modest and the library is smaller. But it exists, it is free, and it closes a meaningful part of the gap that the $39-to-$50-a-month brands are charging to fill. Against Echelon at $39.99 a month, five years of SunnyFit saves you roughly $2,400.
Where Sunny is weakest
Inconsistent disclosure across the range. The Dual-Rail publishes a 300 lb capacity; the long-rail model publishes none. The Obsidian Surge publishes a seat height; the Phantom Hydro does not. It is better than most brands and it is not uniform.
Monitors.Functional LCDs that report time, distance, calories and 500m splits. They do their job and their numbers do not transfer to other machines the way a PM5’s do.
Capacity ceilings.300 lb across most of the range, against MERACH’s 350 lb at a lower price and Concept2’s 500 lb. If you are near 300 lb, look elsewhere in the same price band.
What we did not do
We have not rowed any of these six machines. Everything above is read from Sunny’s published specifications and listing text on 24 July 2026, and dated.

Machine prices are live from Amazon as of July 24, 2026 and change without notice. Subscription figures are the published month-to-month rates, each cited on the subscriptions page. Totals are machine price plus the monthly rate multiplied by 12, 36 and 60. We do not model electricity, shipping, floor mats or resale value — each would need an assumption we cannot source, and adding them would make the number look more precise while making it less true.

Straight answers
Questions people actually ask
Are Sunny Health & Fitness rowing machines good?
For the price, yes, and they have one advantage the rest of the budget field does not: Sunny routinely publishes rail length, inseam clearance, maximum user height and seat height. Those are the specifications that decide whether a machine fits you, and most brands at this price publish none of them. The machines themselves are competent rather than exceptional.
Does the SunnyFit app cost anything?
No. Sunny states on every listing that SunnyFit carries no membership fee, with access to 1,000+ trainer-led workouts included with every product. Against a connected rower at $39.99 a month, five years of SunnyFit saves roughly $2,400.
Which Sunny Health & Fitness rower should I buy?
The Smart Dual-Rail Rower for most people: a published 50-inch rail, 16 magnetic levels, a stated 300 lb capacity and covered dual rails that keep the running noise down. If you are over about 6 ft 2 in, the Extra Long Rail model instead - it publishes 48 inches of rail, 44 inches of inseam and a stated fit to 6 ft 8 in.
What is the weight limit on Sunny rowing machines?
It varies and Sunny does not publish one for every model. The Smart Dual-Rail publishes 300 lb and the Smart Compact Magnetic publishes 285 lb. The Extra Long Rail model, the Obsidian Surge and the SF-RW1205 publish no capacity figure at all. If you are near 300 lb, MERACH publishes 350 lb at a lower price.
Is a Sunny hydraulic rower worth buying?
Only as a way to find out whether you will use a rowing machine. Hydraulic cylinders warm during a session and the resistance drifts as they do, and the stroke is a pull against a piston rather than a drive against a flywheel - it does not much resemble rowing. At $130 that is a reasonable experiment. If you already know you will stick with it, buy the magnetic machine instead.
