A Rowing Machine Glossary
The words rowers use arrive all at once. Here they are in plain English, grouped by monitor terms, stroke terms and machine parts.

Rowing has a vocabulary, and most of it lands on you at once. A coach says “bring the split down and hold the rate at twenty,” a listing promises a “PM5-style monitor,” and a forum thread argues about drag factor as though everyone already knows what it is. None of it is complicated once the words are pinned down. This page defines them in plain English and points to the fuller guide wherever one exists. It is grouped three ways: the numbers on the monitor, the parts of the stroke, and the parts of the machine.
Monitor and pace terms
- Erg / ergometer.A rowing machine that measures the work you do, in watts, rather than merely counting strokes. The word is short for ergometer, from the Greek for “work measure.” Every erg is a rowing machine; not every rowing machine is much of an ergometer. The distinction is here.
- Split.Everyday shorthand for the 500m split — the single number rowers pace by. Lower is faster. “Hold a 2:10” means hold a pace that would cover 500 meters in two minutes and ten seconds.
- 500m split.The time it would take to cover 500 meters at your current pace, and the sport’s standard unit. It updates stroke by stroke and it is comparable between machines in a way distance and calorie figures are not. The full explanation is here.
- SPM / stroke rate.Strokes per minute — how often you are taking a stroke, counted directly. It is separate from pace: you can row the same split at a low rate with hard strokes or a high rate with soft ones. Rate and pace, untangled.
- Drag factor.Concept2’s measure of how much air the flywheel moves per stroke — effectively the true resistance the machine is applying. Because it reads the flywheel itself, it is far more consistent between machines than the 1–10 damper number. Why coaches use it.
- Watts.The raw measure of power you are producing. Everything else on a proper erg monitor — split, distance, calories — is calculated from it.
- Distance. Not a measurement of anything physically traveling, but a calculation from power over time. Two machines fed the same effort will report slightly different distances if their arithmetic differs.
- Calories. An estimate derived from watts, and a rough one. Useful for tracking your own sessions against each other, not for comparison with anyone else or with a treadmill.
- 2k.A maximal 2,000-meter test, the standard benchmark distance in rowing. Most people take somewhere between six and nine minutes and find it genuinely unpleasant. If someone gives a rowing time with no unit — “I went 7:04” — they mean a 2k.
- Rate cap. A workout setting that limits your stroke rate to a chosen ceiling, forcing you to make each stroke do more work rather than simply rowing faster. A common way to train power without letting the rate run away.
- Pace boat.The small animated boat on a Concept2 screen that represents a target pace. You watch your boat against it and try not to let it slip behind — a surprisingly effective way to hold an even effort.

The stroke, term by term
- The catch. The front of the stroke: shins vertical, arms straight, body tipped slightly forward, coiled and ready. The loaded position the drive starts from.
- The drive.The powered phase. Legs push first, then the body swings back, then the arms draw the handle in — roughly 60% of the power comes from the legs alone.
- The finish.The back of the stroke: legs flat, body leaning back to about eleven o’clock, handle drawn to the bottom of the ribs.
- The recovery. The return to the catch, sequenced in reverse: arms away, then body forward, then knees bend and the seat slides up. Controlled, not rushed.
- Ratio.The relationship between the time spent driving and the time spent recovering. A good recovery takes roughly twice as long as the drive; losing that ratio is what rowers mean by “rushing the slide.”
- Layback.How far you lean back at the finish. About eleven o’clock is right; lying flat loads the lower back and adds nothing.
- Rushing the slide. Hurrying the recovery so the seat shoots back to the catch, throwing off timing and pace. The most common rhythm fault. The stroke, in four positions.
The machine, part by part
- Flywheel. The wheel that spins when you pull. On an air rower it is a fan; on a magnetic rower it is a weighted disc braked by magnets; on a water rower it is paddles in a tank. It stores and releases the energy of each stroke.
- Fan cage / flywheel housing. The shroud around the flywheel. On an air rower it is where the wind noise comes from, and where the damper lever lives.
- Damper.The lever numbered 1 to 10 on the side of an air rower’s flywheel housing. It changes how much air reaches the fan — the feel of the stroke — not how hard you have to work. It is not a difficulty dial. What it actually does.
- Monorail. The single beam the seat runs along on most modern machines. Its length is what determines whether a tall rower can reach full leg extension, which makes it one of the specifications that matters most and is published least.
- Seat and rollers. The sliding seat and the wheels that carry it along the rail. Grit on the rail is the usual cause of a rough, noisy slide.
- Handle and chain / strap. What you pull. A chain is durable and slightly noisier; a nylon strap is quieter and, on some machines, the part that eventually needs replacing.
- Footplates / foot stretchers. The adjustable plates your feet strap into. Set too high and you cannot reach the catch cleanly; set too low and your heels lift on every stroke.
Machine types you will hear named
Air rower— resistance from a fan, load rising the harder you pull, and the type most ergs belong to. Magnetic rower— resistance from magnets, quiet and consistent but capped. Water rower — paddles in a tank, prized for feel and sound. Hybrid— a machine combining air and magnetic resistance. The words describe how the flywheel is braked, and that is most of what separates one machine from another.

Questions people actually ask
What is a good 500m split on a rowing machine?
It depends entirely on the effort, the distance and the person, so there is no single 'good' number. A split that leaves you breathing hard but able to hold it for the whole piece is a good one for that piece. Compare a split against your own past splits over the same distance rather than against anyone else - that is what the number is for.
What is the difference between stroke rate and split?
Stroke rate (SPM) is how many strokes you take per minute; split is how fast you are going, expressed as time per 500 meters. They move independently. You can hold the same split at a low rate with powerful strokes or a high rate with lighter ones, which is exactly why coaches talk about both.
What does drag factor mean on a rowing machine?
Drag factor is Concept2's measure of how much air the flywheel moves per stroke - effectively the real resistance the machine applies. Because it reads the flywheel directly, it is consistent from one machine to another, whereas the 1-10 damper number is not. Two machines set to the same drag factor feel the same; two set to damper 5 may not.
What is a 2k in rowing?
A maximal 2,000-meter effort, the standard benchmark test. Most people take between six and nine minutes and find it genuinely hard. It is used to measure fitness and select crews, and when a rower gives a time with no distance attached, they almost always mean their 2k.
What is the pace boat on a Concept2?
A small animated boat on the PM5 screen that represents a target pace you set. Your own boat races it, and keeping level with or ahead of it is a simple, effective way to hold a steady effort across a piece rather than fading or surging.
Is a PM5 the same as an erg?
No - the PM5 is the monitor, and the erg is the whole machine. The PM5 is Concept2's performance monitor, the display that computes power in watts and derives split, distance and rate from it. An erg is any rowing machine that measures work; on a Concept2, the PM5 is the part doing the measuring.
