How to Read a Rowing Machine Monitor

Split, rate, watts, distance and calories - six numbers, and only some of them tell you what you think. Here is what each one means and which to actually watch.

A rowing monitor throws several numbers at you at once, and most beginners watch the wrong one. Here is what each field means, in plain terms, and which ones are worth your attention. The examples use the Concept2 PM5 because it is the monitor the sport standardizes on, but the concepts carry across.

Split — the one to watch

The split, shown as a time like 2:05, is your pace: how long it would take you to row 500 meters at your current effort. Lower is faster. It is the single most useful number on the screen, because it tells you your intensity right now regardless of how long you have been rowing. We have a full guide to the split here. Train by it: “hold a 2:10 split for ten minutes” is a real, repeatable target in a way “row hard” is not.

Stroke rate — not the same as effort

Stroke rate, shown as s/m (strokes per minute), is how many strokes you take each minute — usually 18 to 34 for most rowing. The trap is thinking a higher rate means more effort. It does not. You can pull a fast, weak, splashy 34 and go nowhere, or a powerful, controlled 22 and fly. Chasing the rate is one of the most common ways to row worse. Watch your split; let the rate serve it.

Watts and distance

Watts measure your power output directly and are effectively another expression of the same thing the split measures — higher watts, lower split. Some people prefer watts for intervals because the number moves more obviously. Distance is just meters rowed, useful for setting a target row (“2,000 meters”) but telling you nothing about intensity on its own.

Calories — treat with suspicion

The calorie field is an estimate the monitor derives from your power output, assuming a standard body weight. It is fine for comparing your own sessions and poor as an absolute count of what your body spent — we explain exactly why here. It also keeps counting during rests, which flatters interval totals. Do not build a diet around it.

Drag factor — the setup number

Tucked in the menu is the drag factor, which is not a live workout metric but the machine’s setup: how quickly the flywheel slows between strokes. It matters for making two machines feel the same, and it is worth checking once rather than watching while you row.

Why the monitor is worth paying for

Here is the part budget listings do not tell you: a cheap monitor measures your work less precisely, so its split, watts and calories are rougher, and — crucially — they do not transfer. A 2:05 split on a no-name budget machine is not the same effort as a 2:05 on a Concept2, because the machines calculate it differently and neither is calibrated against the other. If comparing your rows to a workout, a friend, or your past self matters to you, that consistency is a real reason to choose a machine with a serious monitor. What does the split mean on a rowing machine?

The split is your pace expressed as the time it would take to row 500 meters at your current effort - for example 2:05. Lower is faster. Is a higher stroke rate better?

No. Stroke rate is how many strokes you take per minute, not how hard you are working. A fast, weak stroke moves the machine less than a slower, powerful one. Watch your split for intensity and let the stroke rate serve it - chasing a high rate is one of the most common beginner mistakes.

Are the calories on a rowing machine monitor accurate?

They are a rough estimate derived from your power output assuming a standard body weight, useful for comparing your own sessions but not a precise count of the calories your body spent. The figure also keeps counting during rests between intervals, which inflates the total. Do not treat it as an exact number.

Why do rowing machine splits differ between machines?

Because cheaper monitors measure your work less precisely and are not calibrated against each other.
