Damper Setting Explained
The lever on the flywheel housing is not a difficulty dial, and treating it like one is the most common mistake on an air rower.

Every air rower has a lever on the side of the flywheel housing, numbered 1 to 10. Nearly everyone who sits on one for the first time slides it to 10, on the reasonable assumption that 10 is the hard setting.
It is not a difficulty setting. It never was.
What it actually does
The damper is a vent. It controls how much air is allowed into the flywheel housing.
At damper 10, the vent is wide open, the cage fills with air, and the fan has a lot of air to move. The flywheel accelerates slowly and decelerates quickly between strokes — a heavy catch and a short glide.
At damper 1, the vent is nearly closed, less air enters, and the flywheel spins more freely. Lighter catch, longer glide.
The nearest analogy is gearing on a bicycle. Damper 10 is a big gear: slow, heavy, powerful strokes. Damper 3 is a smaller gear: quicker, lighter, higher rate.
Why it does not change how hard the workout is
Because the machine measures power, not resistance.
If you pull 200 watts, you pulled 200 watts, and the monitor will show approximately the same split whether the damper is on 3 or 10. The damper changes how that effort is distributed — a few heavy strokes or more light ones — not how much of it there is.
This is the bit that surprises people, and it is why rowing coaches spend so much time on it. The monitor is measuring work, not resistance.
Drag factor: the number that is actually consistent
Here is the complication. Damper 5 on a clean, new machine is not damper 5 on a dusty one in a garage. Dust in the flywheel cage changes how freely it spins, so the same lever position produces a different feel on different machines.
Concept2’s PM5 solves this with drag factor, which measures the actual deceleration of the flywheel and gives you a number that is consistent between machines. Serious rowers set drag factor, not damper position, which is why you will hear people talk about “a drag of 125” rather than “damper 4.”
If your machine has a drag factor readout, use it. If it does not, damper position is your approximation and you should recheck the feel whenever the machine has been sitting.
Where to actually set it
Between 3 and 5 for most people, most of the time.
That range gives a stroke rhythm close to rowing on water, which is what the machine was designed to simulate. Most competitive rowers train there.
- Damper 1–3: light and quick. Good for high stroke rate work and for anyone with back concerns, because the catch is gentler.
- Damper 3–5: the default. Balanced, and where you should start.
- Damper 6–10: heavy and slow. Useful for short power intervals. Not useful for a twenty-minute steady piece, and it will fatigue your lower back long before it fatigues your legs.
Why 10 is worse than it feels
Damper 10 feels like harder work, which is exactly the problem: it feels productive while producing a worse session.
The heavy catch loads your lower back at the most vulnerable point of the stroke. Your stroke rate drops, so you do less total work in the same time. And it reinforces a slow, grinding rhythm that is nothing like actual rowing.
If you want a harder workout, pull harder at damper 4. The monitor will tell you whether you did.
Machines without a damper
Magnetic and water rowers work differently.
On a magnetic machine the resistance dial genuinely is a difficulty setting — it changes how strongly the magnet opposes the flywheel, and the load really does increase.
On a water rower there is usually no adjustment at all, because the water self-regulates. Where there is one, it is the amount of water in the tank — more water, heavier stroke — and it works much like a damper. The Fitness Reality 3000WR publishes six fillable levels.

What damper setting should I use on a rowing machine?
