YOSUDA Rowing Machines Review

YOSUDA is a budget brand that does two unusual things well: it makes the smallest credible rowing machine we have found, and it makes a wooden water rower that folds in half at a quarter of what a WaterRower costs.

Both are compromises, and both are honest about being compromises in ways the category often is not. The wooden machine publishes its capacity (400 lb) and its maximum user height (6 ft 6 in). The magnetic machine publishes neither, which is a real gap and one we will come back to.

The magnetic rower: 57.9 inches

This is the shortest machine on the site that still gives you a proper sliding seat and a full stroke. At 57.9 inches long, 17.7 inches wide and 43 lb, it is roughly three feet shorter than a Concept2 and light enough that one person can stand it up without planning the maneuver.

Applying our clearance arithmetic, it wants about 5.8 ft by 3.5 ft of floor. That fits in the corner of a studio flat, next to a sofa, in a hallway. For a great many people that is the difference between owning a rowing machine and not.

YOSUDA publishes 16 magnetic resistance levels and PU rollers on the rails. Polyurethane on aluminum is meaningfully quieter than steel on steel, and it is the reason this machine appears on our quiet roundup.

What YOSUDA does not publish here

A maximum user weight, and a rail length. Both matter, and the second one matters more than usual on a machine this short.

A 57.9-inch machine has a short rail by definition. If you are much over 6 feet, your legs may reach full extension before the seat reaches the end of its travel — or worse, the reverse. YOSUDA does not give you the number to check against, so the honest advice is to measure your own leg extension and compare it against the length before you order. That is not a satisfying answer, and it is the true one.

The wooden water rower: the genuine surprise

For around $250, YOSUDA sells a water rower made from 30 mm FSC-certified beech with a 22-liter tank that folds 180 degrees and rolls on built-in wheels. It publishes a 400 lb weight capacity and a stated fit for users up to 6 ft 6 in.

Set that against a WaterRower Natural at roughly $1,700, which does not publish a capacity at all. YOSUDA’s machine is 55 lb against WaterRower’s 103.5 lb filled — lighter to move, and also a comment on how much frame there is.

What you are giving up is real: hand-built Rhode Island construction, thirty years of the same design, the S4 monitor, and the finish that makes a WaterRower look like furniture rather than equipment. YOSUDA’s monitor is basic and the warranty is one year on parts.

What you are getting is the water sound, the self-regulating resistance, a published capacity, and a machine that folds. At a quarter of the price, that is a strong argument.

The brand claim we are not repeating

YOSUDA’s listings state that the company has produced home exercise equipment for 20 years and served more than 3,000,000 families. We have no way to verify either figure, so we are noting that YOSUDA says it rather than telling you it is so.

Similarly, the listings state the stroke engages 85% to 90% of your muscles. That is the standard claim across this entire category — Hydrow says 86%, MERACH says 86%, Aviron says 86% — and no manufacturer cites the study it comes from. Who should buy a YOSUDA

The magnetic machine, if your constraint is space and you are of average height. Nothing else this small rows this properly.

The wooden water rower, if you want a water rower and cannot justify $1,700 for one. It publishes more than the machine four times its price does, which is not nothing.

Neither, if you are tall. The rail lengths are not published on the magnetic machine and the wooden one caps at 6 ft 6 in. Sunny publishes 48 and 50-inch rails in the same price band and is the better-documented choice for taller rowers.
