The mistake people make when buying a rowing machine for an older parent is to shop the way they would for themselves: by resistance, by monitor, by brand. None of that decides whether the gift gets used. What decides it is a number most listings bury and many do not print at all: the height of the seat off the floor. What actually decides this

If getting off the seat is the obstacle: the Concept2 with Tall Legs. It is the only machine we cover with a published 20-inch seat, and that single dimension is what makes it the right gift for this recipient. The trade is that it is a full-length air rower: 96 inches in use, loud, and 68 lb to move, though it separates into two pieces. If the room is a spare bedroom or a garage, it is the answer. If the room is a small flat, read on.

If they would like something gentle and pleasant: the Sunny Obsidian Surge. The 17-inch seat is a real improvement over the 14-inch standard, the water stroke builds resistance only as hard as they pull, and the sound is the sound of water rather than a fan. It stores upright. Add the purification tablets the tank needs; it is the kind of upkeep that is easy to forget.
