An open budget in this category is a trap, because the expensive rowing machines are not better rowing machines. They are rowing machines with a screen, a membership and a monthly bill. The most expensive machine we cover costs more than twice what the Concept2 RowErg does and rows a stroke that is, by any published measure, no better. So the first thing to know about giving a rowing machine with no budget cap is that the best one is not the priciest one, and the second is that the pricier ones are a different kind of gift altogether.

That is the split this page is built on. Three of the six picks cost what they cost and nothing afterwards: the Concept2 RowErg, its tall-legged sibling, and the WaterRower Natural. Three arrive with a monthly membership the recipient will be paying long after they have forgotten who gave them the machine: the Hydrow Wave, the Aviron Strong Series and the NordicTrack RW900. Neither kind is wrong. But a connected rower is a subscription with hardware attached, and the honest way to give one is to know that, say it, and ideally pay the first year.

How to choose

What actually decides this

For the person who rows: the Concept2, and spend the rest on accessories. There is no rower alive who would be disappointed by it, and the money you did not spend on a screen buys a mat, a chest strap and several years of nothing at all per month. If they are older or their knees are the reason they are rowing, give the Tall Legs model; the 20-inch seat is the single most useful upgrade in the category for that recipient.

For the person who would like a beautiful object: the WaterRower Natural.It is the one machine here that people are happy to have in a living room, it stores on end in a corner, and it has no fee. Include a mat and tank tablets. The S4 monitor is fine; if they are a competitive rower who wants split times to compare with the world, the Concept2’s PM5 is the common language and the better gift.

For the person who will only row if someone is coaching them: the Hydrow Wave. The honest case for a connected rower is that a machine that gets used beats a cheaper one that becomes a clothes rail, and Hydrow has the most polished version of that experience. The honest cost is $50 a month without which the screen is dark. Give it with the membership paid, or do not give it.

For the person who is competitive about games: the Aviron. Its workouts are games and races rather than classes, its resistance goes to 100 lb, and its membership is the cheapest of the connected machines at $29 a month. It is also 27 inches wide, which is a real constraint in a narrow room.

For the person whose gym is a living room: the NordicTrack RW900. The largest screen here, silent magnetic resistance, and a membership its own listing describes as required. If the recipient has not asked for classes, the RW300 gives them the same frame with a tablet shelf and no bill.

Four things to check before you order any of them

  1. Their floor. A rowing machine needs about a foot more than its published length and about two feet more than its width. If you can, measure the room it will live in; if you cannot, favour the machines that fold or stand upright. The clearance arithmetic is applied to every machine we cover.
  2. Their weight and height against the published limits.Every card below prints the maximum user weight and height the manufacturer states, or “Not published” where they decline to. Buy headroom, not the line.
  3. Whether the gift has a monthly fee attached. A connected rower is a subscription with a machine around it. Giving one commits the recipient to a membership, or to a dark screen. Every card shows the five-year figure with the subscription in it.
  4. Their walls and their neighbours. Air resistance is the loud kind and no manufacturer publishes a decibel figure. For a flat or a shared wall, a magnetic or water machine is the considerate choice. Here is what is actually knowable about noise.

Peloton, Ergatta and Rogue sell their rowers direct only, so there is nothing for us to link and no buy button we could honestly put on a gift guide.
