Rowing Machine Resistance, Explained

Resistance is the most misunderstood part of buying a rower - levels, dampers and mechanisms all get muddled. Here is what each actually does, and why a big level count can mislead.

Resistance confuses more rowing-machine buyers than any other spec, because the word covers three different things that get muddled together: the mechanism (how the machine creates resistance), the adjustment (how you change it), and the level count (a number on the box that often means less than it seems). Untangling them makes the whole category clearer.

The four mechanisms

  • Air. A fan; resistance scales with how hard you pull, with no ceiling. Great for training, loud by nature.
  • Magnetic. A magnet near a flywheel; silent, consistent, set by a dial, with a fixed top end. The sensible home default.
  • Water. Paddles in a tank; scales with effort like air, but quiet, with a pleasant whoosh, and stores upright.
  • Hydraulic. Pistons; cheap and compact, but the resistance drifts as they warm and the stroke is unlike real rowing.

Self-scaling versus fixed

The crucial split is whether resistance scales with effort. Air and water do — pull harder, the machine pushes back harder, so there is no ceiling. Magnetic and hydraulic are fixed at whatever you set, which means a strong rower can top out the hardest level. For cardio this rarely matters; for hard or heavy training, self-scaling resistance is an advantage.

Why level counts can mislead

“16 resistance levels” sounds better than 8, but a level count on its own tells you almost nothing — 16 levels of a weak magnet is worse than 8 of a strong one. Far more useful is a published force figure: some machines state achievable resistance in pounds, which is a real number you can compare. Weight a published force figure over a level count every time.

The damper is not a resistance level

On an air rower, the damper is the most misunderstood control of all. It is a vent that changes the character of the stroke, not a difficulty dial — the machine measures your power regardless of where it is set. The damper explained in full is here.
