Rowing Machine Monitor Troubleshooting

A blank, frozen or wrong-reading monitor is almost always a battery, a sensor gap or a loose wire - not a dead machine. Here is the checklist before you panic.

A rowing machine’s monitor is the part most likely to misbehave, and the good news is that a blank screen or frozen reading is almost never a broken machine. Nine times out of ten it is a battery, a sensor alignment, or a loose connection — all of which you can check in a couple of minutes. Work through this before you contact support or reach for the warranty.

Blank or dim screen: start with the battery

Most self-powered monitors, including the Concept2 PM5, run on batteries (the PM5 uses two D cells), and a dim, blank or resetting screen is the classic sign they are low. Replace them first — it is the single most common fix. On machines whose monitor is charged by the rowing motion, row steadily for a minute or two to wake it before assuming it is dead.

No data while rowing: check the sensor

If the screen lights up but shows no strokes, distance or split, the pickup sensor is not seeing the flywheel. There is usually a small magnetic or optical sensor with a wire running to the monitor. Check that the sensor sits at the correct small gap from the flywheel and that its wire is seated at both ends — a connector shaken loose in shipping or assembly is a frequent culprit. Reseat the wire and confirm the sensor has not drifted out of alignment.

Wrong or erratic readings

Numbers that jump around or read implausibly high or low usually trace to the same sensor or to a Bluetooth pairing confusion. Try turning off any connected app, checking the sensor gap, and re-pairing from scratch. On air and magnetic machines, an erratic reading is far more often a sensor or software issue than a mechanical fault.

When it really is the monitor

If a fresh battery, a reseated sensor wire and a re-pair all fail, the monitor itself may be faulty — and here the brand matters. Why is my rowing machine monitor not working?
